How to legalise a document

We can help you with:

  • Affadavits
  • Statutory Declarations
  • Certified copies of documents
  • Witnessing/Legalising an original UK birth, death or marriage certificate with a General Register Office Stamp
  • Witnessing/Legalising a signature

Certificates and certified copies will be issued on the spot provided the correct documentation is submitted.

Please note that the Consular Section cannot translate documents.

The Hague Convention: Apostille

Foreign authorities sometimes need official confirmation that a British document is genuine.

Public documents issued in the UK which need to be legalised for use in Luxembourg are covered by the 1961 Hague Convention which abolished the requirement for legalisation of public documents.

If you still require an Apostille, please contact the Legalisation Office at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in London. This is a legalisation certificate which confirms that a signature, seal or stamp appearing on a document is genuine.  Please note that there is a fee for this service.

All UK Educational Documents must be signed by a UK solicitor or notary before they can be legalised.  If you are living overseas, please contact your nearest British Council Office or your nearest British Consulate to check if they offer this service. For further information, please see the FCO legalisation website.
